Transform your ideas into a beautiful space

How to take ideas and transform them into beautiful spaces.

Designing a room from scratch can feel overwhelming.  But it isn't as hard as you may think it is. Honestly, with time patience, and planning you can create a beautiful space. One of the misconceptions about interior design is that everything is going to happen overnight. Let me be honest with you it’s probably not. It's not a TV show. When done right it often happens slowly and over time. Don't try to rush it. Rushing through the design process leaves room for error. It can make your space look incomplete leaving you unhappy with the finished results. It's OK today take your time and get it right there's no rush. I'm going to say it again it's OK to take your time to get it right

Here are some steps for creating a cohesive space with balance and flow

Create a plan. Have you grabbed your copy of my design planning guide yet? This guide will show you how to plan your design, in a step-by-step process. I also show you how to find your design style.

Here is a simplified version of creating a plan.

Find your inspiration room. I recommend gathering about five inspirational images of designs you love. Study them to see if there's a common theme amongst them. Maybe they all have a light color palette or do they all have a strong contrasting color palette? This will help you see what color and style you gravitate to most.

Another area to look at is whether these are more minimalist, or maximalist designs. Do they lean more traditional or modern? Understanding the style you like will help you as you go through the design process.

Now out of those five images take three that you absolutely love. Now let’s narrow it down a little more. Select the one image that you absolutely love of the three remaining. This will be your inspirational photo. If you don’t love it, then start the process over until you have narrowed down your inspiration photo to the one you love.

What is it about this space that draws your attention? Is the furniture, paint, accessories lighting. On a sheet of paper or in your design guide write out how you feel about each of these elements and what you would possibly change or like to see in your own home. Remember this photo is inspiration only.

Now let's create your plan

  1. Find the one piece you want to design around. It could be accent pillows, an area rug, or the color of the sofa or chairs.

  2. Create your layout. Think of the function of the space. What and how will the space be used? For a living room, how much seating is needed at one time? Is this a high-traffic area? Will there need to be a quiet area in the space?

  3. Create your color palette such as a white/off-white, neutral tone and tone, bold or a strong contrasting color palette.

  4. Select your metals, gold, silver, bronze, etc.,

  5. Take inventory of what you already have. Shop your home. You may be surprised to see that you already have items that will work in the newly designed space

  6. Create your shopping list and concept board. It's easy to create a virtual shopping list. Knowing where to shop is a big part and understanding what it is you are looking for. For example, be specific about the type of sofa you would like, such as a deep sofa, a sectional, or a high-back sofa. Also, what type of chairs, such as swivel, or chairs low back chairs? The type of coffee table: square, round, glass, metal, wood, etc., These are all descriptive words that can be used in a google search for the décor you are looking for. Once you find the pieces that work. Copy and paste the image into a program like Canva. This is where you will create a concept board.

As you gather new items for your concept think about how the item will fit in the overall look of the room go back to your inspirational image if you need to. Once you have your concept, design plan and budget set it’s time to shop. Remember to stay true to the design. Everything will look beautiful in the store but may not work with your space.  Your design plan will help keep frustrations and design mishaps at bay.
