Sixty Thirty Ten

60-30-10 is a timeless decorating rule that can help you create a beautiful color scheme for a room or one that flows with your entire house. The 60% + 30% + 10% proportion is a formula that brings balance to the colors used in any space. This concept is incredibly simple and removes a lot of confusion when it comes to decorating a space.

Once you understand the 60-30-10 rule it will make designing much easier. So let's dive in

The rule is that for a well designed room 60% is the dominant color of the space .  This would be most of the walls, accent pieces such as area rugs, and it could also include your sofa and loveseat. This dominant color provides an anchor for the space and a backdrop from the remaining decor.

Now let's discuss the 30% this is the secondary color. This color will be used half as much as the dominant color.  This  could be draperies, sofa & love seat if it differs from the dominant color, accent chairs, large furniture pieces or even creating an accent wall. The secondary color compliments the dominant color and brings visual interest to the space.

The last part of this equation is the 10%. This is were creativity and unique style really come into play.  This 10% is the accent color for a space. If you are styling your living room, this would be your throw pillows, artwork, candles. table lamps and shelf decor. You can pull this 10% accent color from your area rug, wall art, printed fabric used in the space or you can use a color wheel and select a neighboring color of the dominant color.

The 60-30-10 rule can make choosing color  for your home easier and helps you achieve balance. If you are stuck on picking three colors for your color scheme, I recommend using a color wheel or pull colors from artwork, area rug or printed fabric that are in the space.

This process can be fun. A well designed space is a marathon, not a race. Take your time and plan your design including the color scheme.
